Yoga Wisdom – Your Mind Is More Than Your Brain

We can cut open our brain, we can examine all its parts and chambers, we can touch it, we can analyze its molecules. But we still cannot touch or see the mind. Because the mind is an interior level of our being. And interiors cannot be cut open with a knife. Interiors must be interpreted. If you want to know what my mind is like, you must communicate with me. Poking my brain won’t do much. Hook my brain up to an EEG machine can tell you many things about my brain activity, but nothing about how I feel. You, a human being, not a machine, must ask me how I feel.

Drinking Water and Fasting for Optimum Health

We drink water everyday, but why is it that some people enjoy good health from drinking water whereas others do not? The answer is: there is technique to drinking water! Most people drink too little water; this is why their health is not good. How much should we drink then? The answer is that most people need to drink at least four litres of water a day. The amount should be increased if you have skin problem.

Significance of Raja Dhi Raja Yoga (Part 2)

By doing Prán’áyáma the respiration is extended because we know that after every inhalation and exhalation there is pause and this very pause is the cause of some higher intellectual or spiritual thoughts or experience. In the first lesson also there is some kind of Prán’áyáma which naturally happens but in the fourth lesson the Prán’áyáma is separately given to control the breath system. Thus by the increase of this pause period Prán’áyáma is able to help in quietening the wanderings of the mind. Hence it is a very very important lesson.

The lessons of Raja Dhi Raja Yoga , if done perfectly, can lead a person to Savikalpa Samadhi. This Savikalpa Samadhi is Brahma-jinana. Each of the lessons of Sahaja Marga of Raja Dhi Raja Yoga as devised by Shrii Shrii Anandamurtiiji contributes towards the same spiritual goal. … continue reading

There are certain persons who can cure diseases merely by touch. The science behind this is also the application of positive microvita. And the cause of the decomposition of anything overtime is negative microvita. When a person is attacked by negative microvita and certain symptoms are observed, it is called “ prognosis” and when the symptoms develop in the final stage of the disease, it is called “ diagnosis”. There is no doubt that the medicine prepared in a sentient environment by sentient people, from a medium or mother tincture which is also prepared in a sentient environment, will attract … continue reading

The cakras or controlling nuclei of the human body are formed in two ways. The human backbone is composed of several small bones piled one on another, separated by pillow-like substances called discs. Through the center of these backbones runs the spinal cord. This spinal cord seems to be one entity, but there are actually 3 channels within each other containing 3 subtle nerves … continue reading

The human body is one but the approaches of bringing it into ease (free from dis-ease) are manifold. We have yet to discover a comprehensive model of the human body which will reveal the limits and efficacy of different therapeutic modalities. Shrii P.R.Sarkar encouraged the approach of composite medical-pathies. Under such a system, every hospital or clinic will be equipped with treatments stemming from different medical systems. In this way, the patients would be able to receive the unique benefits of an appropriate therapeutic modality. The welfare of the patients has to be the paramount consideration in the choice of … continue reading

There are many ways to treat diseased conditions. Ultimately, however, any disease can only be permanently remedied by uprooting the cause. In the vast majority of cases, the cause lies in unnatural unbalanced physical and/or mental habits. Therefore, changing ones bad habits is the most important part of treatment. The common-sense philosophy and methodology of Natural Therapy is logical and easy to understand … continue reading

In the word “Tantra”, “Tra” is a Sanskrit suffix which signifies repetition. Much of what we do in life is repetition. We repeat a particular action with only some variation of intensity or interest. How many times have you been in this room, how many times have you eaten breakfast, how many times have you eaten ice cream hoping that that ice cream would be the best ice cream you ever ate in your life? What kind of repetition will get us out of repetition? Repetition is circular; it keeps going around and around. “Tra” signifies moving out of circular movement, repetition that brings you up and out of repetition…

In Krishna’s Bhagavad Gita, the great yogi warrior and Godhead of the Indian bhakti movement, emphasizes that yoga is union, love, the source of all things:
He who is rooted in oneness realizes that I am in every being, wherever he goes, he remains in me. When he sees all beings as equal in suffering or in joy because they are like himself, that man has grown perfect in yoga. … continue reading

Testimonials from Our Students

Lee Soon Keng (from Singapore, 2011 Intake)
“Although I’ve been taking yoga since 1988, I’ve never thought of going further than practising it as a form of exercise and relaxation until I took yoga classes at Ananda Marga in 2004. The asanas, or yoga postures, are simple and yet their benefits on both the physical and mental aspects are plentiful. I had wanted to train in the Raja Dhi Raja Yoga to become a teacher but at that time they did not have any yoga teacher training courses. It is only in 2011, their 4th intake, that I am able to commit time to the 10-month Diploma Course.

The course is an eye-opener. It encompasses not only asanas and meditation, but also yogic philosophy, history, creativity (what a surprise!) and an overall holistic way of living. It also opened my eyes to new scientific concepts. It teaches practicality and adaptability. It teaches inner calmness and reflectivity. The camaraderie and friendship made in class is an additional plus. Not only does the course have local teachers but also highly knowledgeable guest teachers from overseas. It is a course that I highly recommend to someone who is interested in yoga, even if one does not intend to teach.”

Chong Nyuk Lan (from Singapore, 2011 Intake)
“As a cancer patient still under medical treatment, simply concerned about my health problem, I joined the Diploma course at the Ananda Marga Yoga Academy. The location of the academy is at a prosperous and lively district, but to my surprise once I stepped inside the school, the aura of the place was totally different from the (outside) elsewhere; it’s calm, peaceful and cozy!

We have learnt about the history, philosophy, science and practices related to yoga and yogic treatment. And after going through the Diploma course I realize that yoga is not only an exercise for physical health as I thought before; it is a meaningful life style that brings us physical, mental and spiritual health. Lastly, I sincerely want to thank Dada Shankarsana’nanda for his way to guide the class, especially for leading us to sing the kiirtan.”
“I came to the teacher’s training course (diploma) after taking a few yoga classes with Ananda Marga. I appreciated the style of yoga which was gentle and yet focused on enhancing the physical and mental benefits for the practitioner. The course was a rigorous but rich one which dwelt into an indepth knowledge of the asanas (yoga postures), the philosophical foundations of yoga, the science of aesthetics and creativity, yogic treatment for diseases and the study of classical yogic writings.

Beyond that, it was deeply transformational as it meaningfully brought me into a deeper understanding of how to live my yoga. With it I am beginning to rediscover my core being, and how to courageously live with a more natural rhythm and openness to life. Under the wisdom and guidance of the teachers, the 10 months started a process of self-reflective journey for me. I would highly recommend this course for those who want to know more than just the knowledge of yoga; & how to truly live it.”
Not only have I gained control over my mind and body, but I have also developed an understanding of universal spiritual truths that, in turn, have contributed enormously to my personal development and fulfillment.

What I enjoyed most about the course is the fact that students are able to put all the acquired knowledge into practice. Indeed, the course is very hands-on and, as such, it goes beyond textbook theories, concepts and principles in order to allow students to experience yoga as it is: a physical, mental and spiritual discipline that expands awareness and brings health and joy to the life of the practitioner.

After taking the course I find myself to be healthier and happier. As an added benefit I am also lighter! But, more importantly, my perspective on life has expanded and I am now able to relate to everything that happens in my life and in the world. Therefore, I have no doubt that this course can be of great help to anyone intending to broaden their horizons and improve their quality of life.”

Seema Vashist (from India, 2009 Intake)
This has reversed the trend of me becoming shy and losing confidence over many years.

I find my body more flexible and mind more relaxed. I get a feeling of closeness with god which has kindled in me a desire to know the real meaning of life and its purpose.

The content and the instructions given in my yoga teacher training course are simply explained in an interesting way and I find it very useful. The course consists of lots of creative and useful activities which are taught in a way which keeps up the interest. All my thanks to Dada Shankarsan’ananda (who will advise you as a father help you as a friend and guide you as a master) and his associates. I consider myself lucky to have joined this course. Worthy of time and effort spent!”

“No glamorous venue, no model facilities, nothing more than just yoga. It is the most down-to- earth yoga class I ever attended in my 6 years yoga practice and the most rewarding one too. Every aspects of yoga have been covered and discussed. Apart from the basic knowledge and skill in teaching, I learnt the way to share my passion on yoga with others and I learnt to become a real yogi. I highly recommend this class to everyone who is interested in yoga, not matter you are beginner or long time practitioner.”

All the modules offered in this course are very interesting and broadens my knowledge and sound understanding and appreciation of these subjects.

The course has deepened my knowledge and understanding of these yogic subjects and has thus enhanced my spiritual outlook in my life. As a spiritual practitioner, it has allowed me to understand my spiritual practices deeper and to appreciate those practices. On the other hand, as a yoga teacher, this course has improved my teaching skills and i have gained much confidence in teaching my students. This course is certainly grooming me to become a well versed yoga teacher and a guide to my students and their needs.

Our academy lecturers Dada Shankarsan’ananda and Dada Dhanjoo Ghista are both dedicated teachers in their respective fields. I am very lucky to be under their tutelage. This course will pave me towards my physical, mental and spiritual growth and progress and to become a better individual in the society. So for those aspiring yogis and yoginis, yoga students and teachers, please consider this academy course and thread on this beautiful journey of self development and discovery of your inner potentials.”

You study the history of Yoga, famous yogis and yogic traditions in history. This ancient yogic tradition has created many remarkable personalities with mystical power and capacity.

Module 2: Yoga Science
Human Anatomy and Yoga Physiology are important aspects of yoga study, but another relatively unexplored aspect of yoga is Bio-Psychology. Bio-Psychology is the study of glands and hormones and their profound effects on all physical and mental functions like growth, digestion, energy levels, emotions, etc. In this module we will also emphasize on meditation and the science of mantra.

Module 3: Yoga Anatomy, Physiology and Bio Psychology
This module aims to give the student a practical understanding of the workings & interrelation between body & mind.

Module 4: Yogic Lifestyle and Practices
How to live as a yogi in a modern and hectic society? This course aims to give you a better understanding of yoga life style, and offer a practical way to become a modern yogi. We will also go into details of the various aspects of the ‘sixteen points’ given by our founder Shrii Shrii Anandamurti, and analyze the ancient Astaunga Yoga: Yama (social harmony), Niyama (personal development), Asana (posture), Pranayama (breathing), Pratyahara (withdrawal of mind), Dharana (concentration techniques), Dhyana (meditation) and Samadhi (the ultimate goal of yoga). You will also learn the yogic system of food and fasting.

Module 5: Teaching Methodology and Professional Ethics
What qualities should a yoga teacher have? This course will focus on the quality of a good yoga teacher and emphasize on teaching methodology, e.g. how to communicate with students, how to demonstrate, observe the student in the class to avoid injury during practice of asana. And we will also discuss the personal and professional ethics of a yoga teacher.

Module 6: Yoga Philosophy
Yoga is a very deep and wide subject to be explored. Yoga philosophy gives us an understanding of life, death, creation, liberation etc. This traditional concept will be explained in the modern content to make you better understand this ancient science.

Module 7: Yoga and Society
Yoga is so much more than just “bend and stretch.’’ The modern yogi is a responsible person and is willing to contribute to the welfare of the society. This module introduces Neo-Humanism from the Yoga perspective, to give you a better understanding of why doing social service (Karma Yoga) is so important for personal development as well as social development.

Module 8: Yogic Treatments

Module 9: Yoga and Creativity
Creativity is a mental process involving the generation of new ideas or concepts, or new associations between existing ideas or concepts, and it originates from the deeper layer of the mind called atimanosa kosa, or ‘causal mind’. Human desire for mental expansion and realisations also originates in this layer of mind. By engaging oneself in creative expression through arts, music, dance etc, one’s atimanosa kosa develops.

This module will partly be conducted in workshop style to allow your ‘creative juice’ to flow freely. You will experience Mandala Art, Bhajans (devotional songs), Prabhat Samgiita (devotional music for mental expansion). We will also study the life and work of mystical artists such as Rabindranath Tagore, Mira Bai and Kabir.

Module 10: Classical Yogic Texts
The evolution of yoga will be seen through studying classical yogic texts such as the ancient Bhagavat Giita, Patanjali’s yoga sutras and Astavakra Giita.

Module 11: Thesis (Independent project)
This module aims at giving the student a deeper understanding of a chosen topic of yoga aspects through research and writing.
